PUPPY DIARY

Week Two

20th October 2008

The puppies are a week old - it does not seem possible the week has gone so quickly!

They are continuing to thrive thanks to Summer's TLC.  Their weight gain is steady and they continue to look like little peas in a pod!

Summer was taken to the vet today as a precaution as one teat seemed to be causing a slight problem.  Thankfully we seem to have caught any problem early.  At times like this phone-calls to friends who have years of breeding experience are also invaluable.  Summer enjoys TLC too - even while having a warm compress on the teat.

Piles of Puppies!

A picture of contentment.

21st October 2008

Today the puppies have made attempts at taking their first steps

As they become more mobile accidents happen and they sometimes bump into sleeping litter-mates!

They also climb over the puppy pile!

Sleep takes up the majority of their day.

Happy Family.

22nd October 2008

All is well with Summer and the puppies.  Birth weights have doubled and eyes are beginning to open.

23rd October 2008

A quiet day in the whelping box again - it is simply fascinating to watch - Summer has everything under control with regard to the feeding and cleaning - and my role is to ensure she is well fed and check the puppies nails etc.

Although the puppies eyes have started to open their vision is very poor.  At this stage their ears are still closed.

25th October 2008

Summer is a very sociable girl and enjoys being with our children.  She is happy for the boys to visit her and the puppies in the whelping box.  This is done under supervision and only for short periods as we like to respect the fact these are Summer's puppies and not ours.  Obviously as the puppies grow they will spend more time with us but as this stage Summer is who they need more than anyone and her welfare and happiness is paramount.

The puppies are very easy to handle and are very relaxed.

The litter has now been registered with the Kennel Club and we will now have to wait to see if our names choices have been approved.  The children came up with a different theme to Norfolk villages and we decided to try their idea.

The puppies continue to sleep and eat their way through the day!  Some even fall asleep on the scales!

Summer enjoying bio yoghurt, Manuka honey and egg yolks - one of her favourite treats - while the puppies sleep close by.
